We’re excited to share the details of a basement remodel we recently completed in Woodbury, MN. Before remodeling, the basement of this 90s home was one big open space constantly used as a dumping ground for workout gear, seasonal decor, and other items. The homeowner wanted to transform the basement into an inviting place where the family’s teenage daughters could hang out while doubling as an area to entertain guests.
With that in mind, the goals for this basement renovation included:
- Adding a fireplace and TV space
- Building a bar area
- Finishing the 3/4 bath (roughed out when the home was built)
- Adding a bedroom
Like most home improvement projects, this basement remodel came with a few challenges! One of the biggest issues was that the main electrical panel was located on the opposite end of the garage — pretty much as far away from the basement as you could get. Getting a new wire into the basement for a sub-panel took a little creative piping, but we managed it! We also had to slide 12-foot-long drywall sheets through the basement window instead of bringing them through the house because there are three 90-degree turns from the home’s main entrance to the lower level.
Challenges aside, we love how this renovation turned out – we can’t get enough of the fireplace! With an ungrouted split-face Travertine tile and a distressed walnut-stained mantle, the fireplace creates an eye-catching focal point that anchors the whole design. Some of our other favorite features include:
- A wet bar with a built-in drink fridge
- New doors and cabinets in a dreamy chocolate stain
- New millwork in a contrasting white finish
- Engineered, water-resistant plank flooring
- A fully finished 3/4 bathroom
