We’re excited to share the details of a recent renovation project our team completed in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. While we’ve worked on many different types of projects, this remodel is a little unique. Rather than a kitchen, bathroom, or whole home remodel, the J. Carsten team helped this client turn their storage shed into a one-of-a-kind backyard retreat.
The 12-foot by 16-foot shed was built years ago to store lawn equipment, seasonal items, and wood for hobbies. However, the homeowner wanted a space to comfortably enjoy the occasional cigar — and the shed provided the perfect solution!
Overall, there were three primary goals for this project:
- Ensure the shed has good ventilation to eliminate cigar smoke
- Create a space to hang out and watch a game or movie
- Create an area where the kids could entertain friends
The roughly framed interior walls and cold concrete floors provided a solid starting point for this shed renovation. Our team installed spray foam insulation, updated the power supply, and added a low-voltage mini-split system for heating and cooling. The mini-split system is Alexa-enabled, allowing the homeowner to control the temperature remotely. We also installed a sub-panel for the lighting, fridge, exhaust fan, TV, and exterior lights.
Our team had a great time working on this project! The newly renovated shed is a cozy space perfect for relaxing and entertaining, whether enjoying the big game, a movie, or a nice cigar! Some of our favorite design features include:
- Rough-sawn cedar wood accent on the lower ceiling
- 5-foot door opening with a pull-down screen
- Waterproof luxury vinyl plank
- Wet bar featuring new cabinets, granite countertop, and a small sink
- Corrugated metal accent wall
- Spacious carpeted loft area
- Vaulted ceiling with cedar tongue-and-groove
