Project Feature: Warm and Welcoming Remodel in Inver Grove Heights, MN

Today, we’re excited to share the details of a project Jason and the J. Carsten Remodeling team completed earlier this year in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. Originally built in 1986, this split level home needed an update! The home’s biggest design hurdle was a small kitchen separated from the rest of the upper level; it also featured typical 1980s millwork in dark oak and a stair railing in disrepair.

The homeowners had big plans for this remodel! Some of their goals included:

  • Removing the L-shaped wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the home
  • Creating extra seating with a built-in bench
  • Updating the electrical and lighting
  • Adding a fireplace and reading area
  • Installing a new patio door and stair railing

Working closely with the homeowners and the team at Chirigos Designs, we got to work creating a new design that checked all their boxes! Like most home remodeling projects, we did face a few challenges.

To start, the kitchen demo revealed that the entryway closet interfered with our proposed design. We removed the existing entryway closet and reframed a new one that went into the garage. We then created a custom storage cabinet to fill the existing closet space in the kitchen. Another challenge we ran into was the subfloor. The previous underlayment was inconsistent in height, so we removed it on the entire first floor and replaced it with new plywood.

Challenges aside, this remodel turned out beautifully! The open-concept space offers a warm and inviting feeling enhanced by the brand-new tile fireplace. The kitchen’s generous island and adjacent built-in seating also provide plenty of space for gathering.

The kitchen features custom white cabinetry, Cambria quartz countertops, and built-in wine storage. Other features we love include the gorgeous engineered wood floors flowing seamlessly throughout, the new Marvin patio door, and the herringbone accent tile above the stove.
